4 Tactics Used by Successful Business People

Success in the business world is neither an accident, nor a carefully crafted plan. There is definitely no one-size-fits-all approach because there are countless factors playing a part – both things you can plan for and those you can’t.

However, if we look close enough, there are common strategies and attitudes seen among successful business people that we can identify. Management consultant, Nancye Combs, shared “10 Ways to Become Invaluable” in her recent article and we’ve drawn inspiration from her in the four tactics described below.

Know What You’re Good At And Hire What You’re Not

Each of us has a natural ability for something. Learn what it is and spend time sharpening that skillset. Focus your efforts on what you enjoy and naturally excel at, rather than tasks you can hire for. The smartest business people don’t attempt to do everything themselves, but instead surround themselves with individuals who are gifted at the things they themselves do not do well or simply don’t enjoy. When everyone plays to their own strengths, that’s when the real magic happens!

Recognize Your Team Above Yourself

Success is almost never accomplished alone, so it’s important to give due credit to those who have helped you along the way. Saying “we” and not “I” when describing company success allows your team to feel included in your journey and empowers them to work harder towards the shared goal of the company doing well. What’s better motivation than knowing your boss personally believes that you’ve been an integral part of their success?

Under Promise and Over Deliver

A manager keen on getting the sale may feel the need to promise whatever the customer needs, no matter the feasibility. While this may be impressive initially, it often leads to an unsatisfactory customer experience because the results aren’t ultimately delivered. Not only that, but it also puts extra pressure on your staff that could result in low morale if this becomes a regular occurrence. It is much better to promise only what can be reasonably accomplished (with a little stretch!) and end up over-delivering than to promise what’s not realistic and fall short of customer expectations.

Follow Your Passion, But Have An Outlet Away From Work

When your job is something you’re passionate about, it may not feel like “work”. If you’ve found that to be the case, consider yourself lucky! Those who genuinely care about what they do tend to be more successful in their roles and find greater satisfaction in life.

On the other hand, when you enjoy what you do, it’s easier to fall into the trap of working all the time. Keep in mind that the human body cannot run at optimum speed endlessly without a break. You will be more productive in the long run by building in some leisure time into your schedule. Develop at least one outside interest to let your mind and body take a break every once in a while. It will leave you feeling energized and refreshed, and will help you focus better when you return to work.
